Turn on only one speaker of your sound system OK, stand in front of it at usual listening distance. Have ready a hand from somewhere, (you can usually find one at the end of your arm) Get a finger from your other hand. Listen for a moment and then, put your hand over your eyes so that you cannot see any light clues. Put your finger tightly in one ear. Now start to turn your self round and round about five times listening carefully. Stop turning and decide where the direction the sound is coming from, remove your finger and hand, where is the sound coming from?. Did you decide correctly.
I did it many times and didn’t get it right once. Each time the sound was louder in a certain direction and when I opened my eyes my ear which did not have my finger in it was facing a wall.
Try it and post the results, it may surprise you as it did me. What does this mean for us when we design loudspeakers?
